Blue Energy – Harvesting the Power of the Sea

A number of kilometers off the coast close to Perth in Western Australia covered beneath the swells and concealed of watchful marine h2o enthusiasts, a few giant buoys will soon begin producing a source of electricity as they bob to the rhythm of the Indian Ocean. 

At 11 meters wide and 5 meters tall, the squat orange floats look a bit like giant pumpkins.  As waves pass by, the tethered buoys will drive hydraulic pumping systems on the oceanic surface, transforming the movements of the sea into 720 kilowatts of electricity to provide electricity for a nearby naval structure.
