Whether it is winter or summer storms there are always ways to prepare for a disaster especially when it includes the extension of your family- your pets. There are certain measures pet owners need to take so that their animals will survive.

Here are a few tips on how to prepare yourself and your pet in case of an emergency:

ID Your Pet

Make sure you pet can be identified either with a microchip or collar ID tag, and that the contact info is up to date.


Rescue Alert Sticker

By getting this sticker you will let people know that there is a pet in your home. Place in a visible spot so that first reponders will recognize the sticker easily.

Prepare an Animal Emergency Kit

Your animal emergency to go kit should contain:

  • First aid supplies
  • 3-7 day water and pet food supply
  • Safety harness and leash
  • Clean up supplies
  • Medical records
  • Vetenary contact
  • Pet information ( routine, behavioral issues, etc...),
  • Comfort toys and a blanket with your scent on it

Make sure the outside of each animal’s to go kit has your cell number as well as email on it. If you can include a picture of your pet as well.

This will save you a lot of time if you need to evacuate fast.


Find an Emergency Place for Your Pet to Stay

If you need to leave your immediate area, its pertinent that you know a good place to keep your pet until you can return for him/her. Scout for hotels and motels with pet friendly policies ahead of time. If you want your pet to stay with you then call your local emergency office to make sure there are places that will accept animals. You can also find a shelter in your area that will take your pet.


Carry a Photo of Your Pet

Carry your pet’s photo with you in the even of a separation, as it will aid you in finding your pet. Plus, you'll get to see your pets adorable face all the time, what's better than that?


Buy a Good Crate

Having a good crate or pet carrier will be vital to transporting your pet in the case of an emergency. Have some blankets and towels nearby to put in your pet's crate.
