Disaster Planning

Emergencies are not something that can always be foreseeable so it is imperative that you plan ahead in case you find yourself in that situation. Don't wait to prepare for the safety of you and your family.

Here are some tips on how to get ready in case disaster strikes.

It is important to note that you should have a 3-day supply of food, water, and any other items that you keep in an easy to carry emergency kit, in case you need to evacuate. Keep a 2 week-supply of food at home in case stores close.

Quick tip: Keep an eye on expiration dates so you can replace expired or outdated items when needed.

Here are 14 essential items to pack in your emergency kit:

  • Water - Ideally you should be storing one gallon of water per person per day, for at least three days.
  • Food - Store at least three days of non-perishable, nutritious food that requires little to no water or cooking to prepare.
  • Flashlight - Consider a solar paneled flashlight so that you don't run out of energy if you need it to last a long time.
  • Radio
  • First Aid Kit
  • Multi-Purpose Tool - There are several tools that fold up into one pocket-size unit.
  • Personal Documents - This can include medical information, deed to home, proof of address, passports, birth certificates and insurance policies.
  • Map - A detailed map of the surrounding area with alternative routes for evacuation can come in handy when roads are blocked due to disaster.
  • Emergency Blanket
Small, light weight and compact, an emergency blanket can be used as a source of warmth during a power outage or winter storm.
  • Cash - ATMs and banks may be closed following a disaster, so keep small bills and change on hand to buy supplies.
  • Contact Information - Keep emergency contact information written down so that you can get in touch with people.
  • Cell Phone
  • Sanitary Supplies
  • Medical Supplies

Once you’ve made your kit, make sure you know your disaster plan. Meet with your family or household members, and discuss how to prepare and respond to emergencies. Come up with responsibilities for each member of your household so that you can all work together like a team.
