3 Ways to Check Your Oil and Keep Your Emergency Power Generator in Shape

Forty to sixty percent of emergency power generator failures are attributed to cooling system performance. If you have an emergency power system installed in your business, you’ll want to regularly check your oil to stay out of trouble.

Analyze Your Oil in Your Emergency Power Generator

Below is the simple three-step process to analyze the oil in your emergency power generator:

1. Oil color

If you see discolored oil, you’re in the red zone. Make sure that your coolant/anti-freeze doesn’t get into the oil. Your diesel engine won’t be able to handle it. Bad injectors and fuel pumps can dump fuel oil into the oil sump. If this goes undetected, you’ll have to fix it.

2. Coolant analysis

Make sure you’re using the recommended coolant by the generator’s manufacturers. As they say, different strokes for different folks. Do this and your emergency power generator will always be at top performance. It’ll also last longer, and you’ll avoid rust, additive loss, galvanic corrosion and more.

3. Fuel analysis

Your fuel should be consistently clean. It will probably sit in your backup generator for a while, so find out if your generator can run on old fuel. Idle fuel will degrade through oxidation and create corrosive byproducts that can contaminate the other components in your emergency power generator.

Other than checking your oil, it’s important that you don’t use poor quality fuel. That kind of fuel can carry debris and deteriorate the metal in the tank.
