Batteries are the weakest link in your critical power supply.  Routine battery maintenance is essential for reliable power availability.  All JT Packard maintenance plans are provided in accordance with IEEE Standards 1188 and 450 for VRLA and flooded batteries, respectively.  We offer service plans tailored to match your battery type and application.

We monitor critical performance parameters, which include:

  • Measurements to maintain balanced levels in all redundant strings and identify bad cells requiring replacement before they negatively affect other cells 
  • Temperature,  which has a direct influence on a battery's life, as uneven temperatures in a string cause cells to float differently
  • Matching charge voltage to ambient temperature
  • Maintaining proper float current, as improper ripple affects the batter life

Spill Containment Safety Systems

Battery strings are an important component of your critical back-up power system, but the sulfuric acid and lead contained in batteries is extremely hazardous. If improperly handled or a slow leak remains undetected, batteries become extremely hazardous to employees and visitors, and corrosive to the surrounding equipment and flooring. 

JT Packard can outfit and install your NFPA/IFC compliant battery Spill Containment System. The watertight liner-based system features include:

  • Modular design to accommodate a variety of configurations
  • Flexibility to work on raised floors, hard floors, or cabinets
  • Class A fire rating on the liner
  • UL listed and approved system

Beyond containing potential battery spills, there are additional safety issues affecting personnel involved with the handling and clean-up of spills. The EPA has outlined safety requirements associated with stationary batteries, which require proper ventilation, signage, and eyewash stations/showers, and on-site spill response kits. These kits provide all of the clothing and tools necessary to protect the personnel responsible for clean-up and proper disposal of the spill, as well as acid spill absorber and neutralizer. 

 

Battery Testing & Evaluation Services

Battery Acceptance / Performance Test
This off-line discharge test utilizes a load bank with constant current capability, while continuously monitoring each individual battery cell voltage. The load bank offers the ability to adjust resistance as voltage drops. This test is performed to truly assess the battery's absolute capacity.

Battery Run Time Test
If you are without generator backup power, it's important to know your actual battery run time. This test transfers power to the batteries and monitors their run time, providing you a performance snapshot. You will learn how much time you have for a systematic shut-down, in the event that your utility power is disrupted.

Environmental / Safety Compliance Evaluations
Stationary batteries present a unique set of liabilities, as they contain sulfuric acid and lead, materials classified as extremely hazardous. Federal, state, and local governments have codes regulating the use of stationary batteries, as does the EPA, OSHA, and NFPA. We can partner with you to bring your facility up to code in areas such as spill containment systems, personal protection fire/life/safety systems, and/or building signage.
